The problem is that magical thinking and religious permissiveness leaves a wide open door for this kind of religious zealotry. While the majority of people might be moderate in their behaviour, a society that allows and encourages faith over evidence and respect for religious authority and ideas above and beyond all other ideas and authorities is a society that has created a breeding ground for the worst examples to flourish among them.
Unfortunately, that's the price of catchy slogans. Just recently I was hammered pretty good for a flippant slogan "embrace the power of AND!". I meant it to be a facetious way of pointing out that polyamory is *one method* of sometimes avoiding certain problems that comes with monogamy and I was immediately blasted for "proselytizing" and trying to say that polyamory is the solution to everything for everyone.
The problem is, a full explanation just doesn't fit on a billboard.
