*laughing* I'm an optimistic on this subject. The fact that people are discussing it even if they are getting it wrong at the moment heartens me. Every sign of curiosity I think of as a little ember to blow on but what really heartens me is everyone I meet in every walk of life thinks science is nifty. Its happening people are changing we just need to wait for the real cowards to get near the grave then I, or at least my homies from the NIH, will be there holding out salvation. Offering a few more months a few more years before people get to test their faith for good and then we have them. Science is your savior motherfuckers.

Yeah, except while some of these people don't necessarily seek death some of them find it a WELCOME.
After all, when they die they get to go to their Heaven & be with their God and then sneer at all of us in the lake of Fire.
Do you know WHY the Catholic church considers suicide the only unforgivable mortal sin?
Around 400 AD a large movement started with all the Christians saying "Man, life here in the Dark Ages sucks ASS. Since Heaven is SO much better, let's all pray, get right with God, and them commit mass suicide!"
A number of orders broke away from the Church and started encouraging this and the church realized they had to put a stop to it so BAM, suicide became the only unforgivable thing.

It's like I always say about the Abrahamic faiths. They're fundamentally flawed as they perpetuate the idea that those who follow their version are "Saved" (or "Chosen" in the case of the Jews) and somehow better than all the dirty sinners out there, that death will be a glorious affair that's FAR more important than life, and that the end of the world will be any day now.
American Christians and fundamentalist Muslims are arguably the worst in regards to holding such doctrines.
IMO, no one who follows such a belief path can be called sane or counted on to do anything in their lives that's rational, good for the world as a whole, or that looks to the future.

Yeah but the dark ages sucked! We've got cable! Seriously life is pretty soft these days compared to historical times and I'm not counting on people to be rational I'm counting on them to be cowards!
Sure there will be true believers. We see folks like that on both sides but those folks are outliers on the bell curve. Ask anyone who's getting near their final date with destiny if they'd like a little more time and you're gonna see people say hell yeah.
In my opinion the only folks that are going to really stick to their religious beliefs, besides said outliers, are people who can't afford what ever life prolonging miracles science has cooked up. They of course will go all sour grapes and convince themselves they are not doing it for moral reasons so as not to face the fact that society has decided they are too poor to live but hey thats what you get if you want a free-market driven health care system!
