joreth: (Rock Climbing)
I've found several cool links since I've had 3 weeks with nothing better to do than stare at my laptop.  So I'm sharing them here:

http://www.dvdspot.com/member=Joreth - DVDSpot, an online database manager for your DVD collection.  This links to my collection, but you can create your own database from there.  A few years ago, my house was robbed and Gumby's entire DVD collection was stolen.  The insurance company, of course, wanted an itemized list and estimated price for every item stolen so they could assess the damages and payout.  But who among you can provide a list of every DVD you own and it's MSRP?  Well, fortunately, Gumby had just learned html and for some unknown reason, created a webpage with thumbnails of all the movies he owned.  With that webpage, I was able to search online for the MSRP and give the insurance company a complete list and cost of everything that was stolen.  That really made the difference in how much money they gave us, because they were counting on us not knowing that information and they won't pay out for "guesses".  After that incident, I decided that I should also keep a list of my own movies, but I never got around to it.

With the holidays, some people have made remarks that it's hard to know what to buy for people when you don't know what they already have.  So, with those two reasons in the back of my mind, I was going to just create a spreadsheet with all my movies, until I found this website.  It has all sorts of really neat features.  Besides just being a list of all my movies, it looks pretty with it's thumbnail images of the cases, and has all the information about the movie you never cared about.  Besides having a plot synopsis, it includes the cast, crew, genre, up to 16 subgenres, it's rating, run time, UPC code, studio, release date, and a whole shitload of other things including ... the MSRP!  This website knows how much this movie is supposed to sell for and will even give you a grand total of how much your collection is worth!  This is INVALUABLE information if you ever have to report it to your insurance company.

What's also great about this website is you can create a list of movies you own, movies you've watched (I use this to list my backup copies of movies ... when Gumby had his collection, I made a bunch of backups so I could watch them too without borrowing his and possibly losing or damaging them, but I would someday like to have the store-bought versions), movies I want (I use another website for a wishlist), and I can post a schedule of Movie Nights.

And, of course, there is a Friends option.  If you start your own online collection, you can visit your friends' collections and click the Add button, and then you will both be notified whenever you each add a new movie or fill out a review.  It's a good way to find out what your friends think of movies.

So, for practical reasons, I highly recommend this website.  Plus, it's cool

http://www.thethingsiwant.com/joreth - The Things I Want, an online wishlist.  I reviewed this site before in its own post, so I'll try to keep this brief.  Basically, you download and install a plugin for your browser (I think it's only for I.E, but I didn't really look into that).  Then, whenever you're online and you see something you want, click the Add To TheThingsIWant button and a window pops up to collect the data, lets you review and edit it, then adds it to your wishlist.  You give out your wishlist to anyone you want, you can password protect it, you can create several different wishlists (great for families to have their own wishlists, especially if there is a shared computer and/or the parents want to have some measure of control about their kids online usage), you can set different levels of permission for each wishlist, and you can give your friends Guest Access to control who can see what.

In my wishlist (linked above), I have a general wishlist that I use both for gift-giving suggestions and to make a list for myself, anytime I get a little extra money or a gift card, I can go visit my wishlist to remind me all the things I want.  I also have a separate wishlist that is adult-oriented that you can only see if you have your own wishlist and we give each other Guest Access.  You can then view your friends' wishlists and even sort them by priority, price, and tag/keyword.  I found it fairly easy to use once I figured out the Guest Access and permission features.  Ordering a list can be cumbersome if your list is more than a couple of pages though.

http://recipes.thinksurfing.com/ - Shellie's Recipe Gallery is a site I found while looking for a recipe I used to have but couldn't find.  When I was a teenager, in preparation for someday moving out of my parents house, I signed up for this mail-order recipe club that sends these giant index cards with recipes on them in a nice little plastic case.  I learned a lot about cooking and have enjoyed every recipe from them I ever tried.  So, when I went looking for one of those recipes, imagine my surprise to find a website that is comprised of this very same collection!  It's the Healthy Meals In Minutes collection and although the "In Minutes" portion is somewhat misleading, they are fairly easy to make and pretty good tasting too.

http://www.biblegateway.com/ - Bible Gateway is a searchable online Bible!   [personal profile] tacitintroduced me to this nifty little feature.  It comes in handy when arguing with Bible-thumpers.  I like to throw back someone's own source at them.  Did you know that dragons are mentioned in the Bible no less than 10 times?

http://del.icio.us/Joreth?page=1 - All my favorite websites can be found on Delicious!  This is an online bookmarking site.  In addition to (or instead of, if you prefer) Bookmarking or Favoriting websites locally on your browser, you can bookmark them on Delicious and access them from any computer with internet access.  I'm often out somewhere without my own computer (yes, I know some of you are surgically attached to yours, but I'm not), and I'll find myself talking about some cool website that I can't remember the url for.  Now I don't have to, as long as I can get to the internet.  This site also requires a browser plugin and when you want to bookmark it, you click the Bookmark On Delicious button and you can edit the description and add tags for easy searching later.  As with many online databases, you can add Friends, and when you add a link, you can choose to share it with your Friends (in addition to making it either public or private), who will then be given a list of links on their own profiles that they can go check out.
