Most of my friends and coworkers are male, and what I hear from them is that they have no idea what women find objectionable or why any given woman didn't respond or stopped responding. Most of them aren't really jerks, they're just clueless (and I don't publicly embarrass these guys).
When women just ignore people who behave poorly, there is no social penalty to discourage them from continuing the behaviour. My philosophy is that anyone who took the time to message me deserves the time for a response. When they're particularly assholish about it, then they deserve a particularly assholish response :-) but not everyone is willing to go to that extreme. And that's OK, but I still believe that people should be told when they've done something wrong or unacceptable, in order to give them the chance to correct it.
And if I don't actually change someone's mind about the appropriateness of their approach, I hope I can at least scare them into changing their approach purely to avoid the possibility of being treated like this by someone else :-)
