So, 2 weeks ago I told ya'll about "Family - the web series", a YouTube "TV" show about a poly triad. Well, their second episode is up!
This time, the triad goes to a poly meeting to meet other poly people. I thought this episode was hilarious. I think it did a great job of cariacturizing (is that a word?) the different kinds of poly people we often meet at these gatherings, and the types of conversations we have. I think it poked some fun at just about everyone, and I think poking fun at ourselves is important to do, especially when trying to explain ourselves. The poly community can sometimes get a little carried away with our own self-importance and the importance of the "poly movement". I think some people get caught up in how "enlightened" they think they are now that they've found the "solution" to relationship issues, and we need to be able to laugh at our own foibles.
I also think this episode can help those of us who consider ourselves "polyactivists" or who want to be involved with the media to learn to see ourselves as outsiders might. Sometimes, our message and our approach needs to get toned down a little if we want to be understood by those who don't immediately "get" us, whether it's the media, our neighbors, or even newbies at the meetings.
I just hope that the tone of the whole series isn't one big joke on the polys! But so far, I think the humor is well-placed and 3DogPictures is doing a pretty good job of very quickly and succinctly exploring poly concepts in a short but entertaining venue.
