joreth: (Dobert Demons of Stupidity)

According to Editor & Publisher, Obama now has a 3 to 1 lead over McCain in newspaper endorsements -- 51 newspapers with a total 6,299,363 daily circulation. At least seven of those papers endorsed President Bush in 2004.

McCain Using Same Robocall Firm That Helped Smear Him In 2000 - yes, the same company that George W. Bush used in the North Carolina primaries to basically phone-spam voters and "smear" McCain, for which he expressed public outrage, is now being employed by McCain himself for the very same smear campaign against Obama. Maverick: doing the exact same thing as one's party stipulates, particularly the most heinous or the actions most disliked by the voters one is serving.

Racist 'N-Word' Robocall Reported In Pennsylvania - "The third party call was interactive, and purported to be from Barack Obama himself. The call starts out reasonably, and then "Obama" asks what the listener thinks is the most important issue. Whatever the response, "Obama" then launches into a profane and crazed tirade using "n***er" and other shock language."

Palin Office Wants $15 Million For Emails - Sarah Palin has offered to sell emails from the governer's office that the media have been clamoring for. Not until after the election, of course.

And the shocking video of hatred and racism at a Palin rally:

Some of the more offensive bits were:
  • The guy holding a fucking stuffed MONKEY with an Obama bumper sticker on his forehead, telling us it was "Little Hussein" and cackling.
  • The most absurd connection between Obama and Osama (the only difference is BS).  It's a fucking name that his parents gave him, for fuck's sake, it has nothing to do with his politics or religious beliefs!
  • Someone shouting "Hussein Muhammed Obama!"  Aside from the previous comment about his name not having anything to do with his politics or religion, Muslims make up a huge population in the world and as legitimate American citizens.
  • Someone shouting "Obama bin Laden".
  • That same asshole shouting "born in Kenya, citizen of Indonasia" (I'm sure he meant Indoneysia).  Uh, hello, he was born in Hawaii, that's a matter of public record.
  • "Kill some more babies you bastard!" Same guy.
  • "Kill the babies!  Abortion after they're born!" Different guy this time.
  • "If he gets in office, he's gonna have not a cross-section of America in his cabinet.  It's gonna be Al Sharpton, Rev. Wright, Jesse Jackson"  Can we say racist?
  • A guy grabbing his dick and yelling "Kiss my lipstick!"
It's just apalling that we still have racism and bigotry to this degree after all these years of suffering and fighting.  There are plenty of legitimate reasons to not like Obama, but the Republican supporters caught on this video are the lowest of the low, spouting blind hatred, misinformation, and outright lies.  For all the faults of the Democrats, this is usually not one of them.

I outright fear and loath Sarah Palin and I'm pretty afraid of McCain too, but I might develop a glimmer of respect for them if they or their "official campaign" would make a statement discouraging this kind of behaviour.

Oh, wait, they can't.  They're the ones who started spreading the rumors and lies and half-truths this hatred is built upon.

No kidding! It's like the stupid people of the USA (and world in general) just love to show off how stupid and rediculous (SP?) they are.

Why can't they be to stupid to run the camera?

It's not that stupid people like to be on TV, it's that the media wants to sell advertising. They do this by getting folks to tune in. Folks tune in to see funny or shocking things. That level of stupid is shocking and funny specifically because it is uncommon. If it were commonplace, it wouldn't been news.

There you have it. The fault rests with the media... and ultimately... us.

But feel encouraged. It only works because it's uncommon for people to be so G*d damned stupid.

McCain is doing his usual playing every side of every position. He did condemn one of his supporters at a rally for calling Obama an Arab. And he did tell his supporters that Obama is a man he respects but has significant disagreements about policies with. And he's also tossing more mud than ever.

I'd call his actions schizophrenic, except that the way schizophrenic is used colloquially isn't really a good match-up for what schizophrenia is. But I can't think of any term that fits and isn't bad psychology. He is erratic.

The way schizophrenic is used colloquially seems more to resemble multiple personality disorder. But "multiple personality disorder," doesn't really roll off the tongue and I don't even know if it's recognized as a real disorder anymore. There must be a good word for seemingly random, inconsistent, crazy, multifaced etc..

While people usually do use schizophrenic to refer to something far more like MPD (which is now generally called DID (disassociative identity disorder) in psych circles), I don't like that description either. I have friends with MPD, and McCain's actions don't fit that pattern too well either. Obviously cases of MPD vary a lot, but I don't want to use someone's condition as a negative analogy.
