My partner told me about (and I later found online) an article that was written him -- the headline was something like "Homeless Man Becomes PhD Candidate." By the time I met him, he was making a good living and paying his own rent and bills, but he was homeless for a while a few decades ago. What actually is remarkable is that he managed to get admitted to college and attended for a few years while he was officially homeless. He had to commute to college from the homeless shelter for a few semesters before he managed to find a way to pay for campus housing. To me, the amazing thing is that he was ever homeless. He's extraordinarily bright, but that did not save him from living on the streets. It can happen to anyone.
