My SO and I were both very disturbed when during our holiday visit to his parents, his father told his mother she was "not allowed" to say thus-and-such. (She was complaining bitterly about a neighbor taking advantage of her.) I think my jaw actually dropped. Fortunately, he didn't pursue the matter with her any further than that. But still.
