Master Costumer?!
Jun. 4th, 2007 08:11 pmI've been attending sci-fi conventions for a couple of years now, and I consider myself an amateur costumer ... not quite cosplay and not quite good enough for professional, but pretty damn good for home-made. I sort of specialize in the costume-on-a-budget and costumes-of-unusual-materials niche without being movie-quality good that your average person couldn't do what I do. Being interested in costumes, I have attended quite a few costuming panels at the various cons hoping to expand my repetoire of skills, and each and every time I come away thinking "I wasted my time sitting through that, I could have taught it". The costuming panels are all just too basic, made for the very beginner. While I think they are valuable presentations, I don't think they are appropriate for me and for quite a few of my friends who are fellow costumers.
At Baycon this year, I sat in on a body-casting workshop. Again, it turned out to be too basic for me and I felt I could have taught it myself. The presenter was obviously knowledgable and experienced, far more so than I, but the material covered in the presentation was stuff I had already figured out on my own. Seeing such a messy presentation, however, got me wondering if I could give a latex presentation?
So I contacted the organizer of Necronomicon and asked if there was a place for me there. She enthusiastically agreed and scheduled me for Sunday, listing me in the program as "Master Costumer" based on my website and past costumes. She remembers my metal Slave Leia. Unfortunately I cannot actually do a live latex demo (something about the fumes being a health concern), but I will have images, samples, and all the materials, and I will give a step-by-step lesson.
So come out to Necro and see my Fire Elf in Masquerade on Saturday night, then check out my workshop on Sunday to see how I made it!
