I, also, have a very strong anger that I've always called "rage", that my politeness is a buffer against. Concentration on formality, particularly formality that requires superficially nice behaviour, is the most effective way to keep a leash on my temper.
So being informal means that I'm not in any fear of getting angry. It implies an incredible amount of trust in the other person. But, to people who do not hold this viewpoint, it is seen as being disrespectful.
