Ayuh, I know that feeling! I'm totally OK with using the double lanyard while walking the beam itself, because I don't have to stop and trade clips very often - in one building in particular I think it's something like every 20 feet and I'm just walking, not using my arms for anything else. But while climbing and descending is really way too much work and increases the chance of injury due to fatigue and stress.
Now, if a building wanted to install belay lines for use while ascending and descending, I wouldn't object to that, but no building is going to put in that amount of safety system - it's just too expensive to redo the system.
