Yeah, it was quite frustrating to be told things only in private or in confidence, and when I stood up for them, to have those people silent because they just didn't feel like "part of the community" and so didn't want to butt in. Several of these people weren't even on the email list at all and so missed the whole debate the first time around (and the second time ... this last time took place on the biz list), even though they live in the area and had attended meetings recently enough to have direct opinions on these issues.
I appreciate the offer of help. Any effort at ongoing advertising would be grateful, and I will eventually need people who can open the building for the group on days that I can't attend. We have the whole facility to ourselves on Sundays, which is awesome, but it means that someone with a key to the building has to be there to let everyone else in.
I do have a file uploaded to the group that is a set of business cards that can be printed on regular white business card paper and any member of the group is welcome to download the file, print them, and hand them out. Occasionally, I may be talked into printing them *for* certain members, but I don't want to make that a general policy. I also have a brochure I've made up that I plan to upload too, and that can be printed on glossy white 8.5" x 11" paper and handed out. I'm hoping to run to Kinko's before the meeting and have some printed there (to save my printer ink) that I can leave at The Center in their little brochure kiosk thingy by the front door, and maybe take some to the Poly/BDSM panel at the Woodshed too.
I'd like to make OrlandoPoly what PolyCentral likes to say it is ... run for and by the community. So, although I'm getting it started, I don't want this to be Joreth's Poly Group. I'm intentionally setting up the structure so that it will have the flexibility to change to meet the needs of the community at each meeting. If only a small number of people who are already friends show up and don't want to have a formal "meeting", The Center is quite comfortable for just hanging out, or the meeting can be adjourned early and moved to a restaurant, or people can just go home. Then, when it fluctuates back towards a larger group with discussion topics, The Center is still set up for effective meetings. Plus, I love the idea of having poly movie screenings there, and I'm building a collection of poly movies to make available either for scheduled movie viewings or for an as-needed basis if that's what the group wants to do that month.
So I'm hoping that, over the next few months, people who are interested in taking a more active role in the community will step up and OrlandoPoly can be run according to what its members actually want from it, not from a prescriptive idea of what this club is supposed to be.
